Some watchmakers are proud of their history. We prefer making it.

Telling the complete story of Armin Strom isn’t exactly straightforward. That’s because it’s a tale that predates the inauguration of our manufacture on Bözingenstraße in Biel. In short, it’s a story of chance encounters and serendipitous events. So, for both your time and ours…

RESONANCE PHENOMENON

Inspired by Antide Janvier’s 18th-century Resonance Clock and officially certified by the Centre Suisse d’Electronique et de Microtechnique (CESM) as “True Resonance,” the Dual Time GMT Resonance fulfills the long-standing horological ambition that began with Christiaan Huygens’s clock experiments following his discovery of Resonance in 1655. Both independent time zone displays of this timepiece benefit from chronometric consistency and timekeeping precision achieved via continuously-maintained Resonance, which mitigates torque fluctuations on the escapement and escapement wheel. Shared vibrations are transmitted via our purpose-built oscillation bridge “the Resonance Clutch” to sustain the Resonance phenomenon with unprecedented resistance to disruption. Exceptional hand-finishing and the dial-side kinetic spectacle of Resonance complete the value proposition for this extraordinary timepiece.

A CLOSER LOOK at the all-new Minute Repeater Resonance 12:59 First Edition:

In standard mode, the timepiece chimes the time as displayed. In 12:59 mode, it executes the full Westminster sequence on demand: twelve hours, three quarters, and fourteen minutes. The selected mode is shown via a discreet aperture (white/red).

From a performance perspective, the development of our Minute Repeater was focused on four key aspects: volume, purity of tone, timbre and richness. It had to be audible at arm’s length without straining. The quality of every individual note was paramount. And each gong strike had to be clear and free of rattling or distortion. Timbre, the character of the sound, was also a key concern: as it is shaped by the composition of the gongs and how they are attached to the case. Richness of sound, how well each note is sustained after being struck, was an absolute priority. And perhaps counterintuitively, the silence separating the hour, quarter, and minute groups was just as important as the strikes themselves. That’s because a clear pause allows the listener to mentally count and distinguish each sequence. The tempo of the strikes therefore had to be evenly spaced with no acceleration or deceleration through the striking sequence; with a smooth, controlled end to each sequence, without a final jarring strike. The design process for our 12:59 Minute Repeater Resonance rejected every conceivable compromise. When combined with Resonance and the world’s first on-demand Westminster chime option, it’s fair to say that there’s simply nothing else like it.

We’re exhibiting at Watches and Wonders. We welcome you to stop by to see (and hear) our Minute Repeater Resonance for yourself.
