A Living Stone: Why Armin Strom Chose a Natural Ruby Dial

Ruby has always played a role in watchmaking – but usually hidden inside the movement. Synthetic ruby jewels reduce friction between moving parts and keep a mechanical watch running smoothly for decades. With the Mirrored Force Resonance Ruby, we brought ruby out of the movement and onto the dial, this time as a genuine, naturally mined stone.

Why do watches contain ruby?

Ruby jewels have long been used inside watch movements as synthetic, lab-grown stones that reduce friction between moving parts. Armin Strom’s Mirrored Force Resonance Ruby reverses this tradition: it uses genuine, naturally mined ruby for the dial itself, where its purpose is purely aesthetic.

What makes a natural ruby dial unique?

Because it’s cut from real stone rather than grown in a lab, no two natural ruby dials are identical – the inclusions and tonal variations are signatures of authenticity, not flaws.

Natural Ruby vs. Synthetic Ruby: What’s the Difference?

Synthetic ruby is grown in a lab to exact, repeatable specifications – ideal for the tiny jewels that keep a movement precise. Natural ruby is mined, shaped by mineral processes over millions of years, and prized for its vivid character and intrinsic vitality. Both belong in the Mirrored Force Resonance Ruby: synthetic rubies inside the calibre for friction and precision, natural ruby on the dial for presence and depth.

No Two Dials Are Ever the Same

Because each dial is cut from genuine ruby, fine inclusions and tonal variations are unavoidable – and that’s the point. We treat these natural signatures as marks of authenticity rather than imperfections. No two stones, and no two dials, are identical. The result is a watch where natural luminosity interacts with light in a way no synthetic material can replicate, revealing shifting red tones against the exposed mechanics.

A Collaboration with a Local Stone Artisan

We created the dial together with a local stone artisan, reflecting co-founder Claude Greisler’s belief that materials must carry meaning beyond aesthetics. In watchmaking, ruby has always played an essential role; here, we’ve given it a new one.

Limited to 5 Timepieces

The Mirrored Force Resonance Ruby is housed in a 43mm stainless steel case with a grey Alcantara strap and white stitching, complemented by white printed Roman numerals. At the heart of the movement is the manufacture Calibre ARF21, with a patented Resonance Clutch synchronising two independent balance wheels for enhanced chronometric stability. Just 5 pieces exist worldwide.
